The end of Globalization 2.0 leads to boosting SDGs thanks to Lighthouse Cities

Davos, May 27, 2022.

While the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted the risk of a potential end of Globalization, the participants of this years UNGSII SDG Lab enjoyed the perspectives presented by the Mayors of Brasov and Sarajevo who inspired the audience with their concrete steps to move forward on implementing the SDGs. Both the SDG3 Health Project Fund and the SDG8 Energy Project Fund were presented and should be able to create the first projects in Q3 this year during the Green Cities Conference hosted in Brasov Sep 5-7, one of the largest Cities in Romania.

“Globalization 2.0 had to come to an end, as the so-called United Nations were less united than we thought”, says Roland Schatz, founder and CEO of UNGSII Foundation. “We all had to wait until Sept 25 2015 when 193 heads of states agreed on accepting the framework of the 17 SDGs including the 169 precise targets as new framework which they would like to see their citizens, companies, universities, cities etc, operate in order to achieve the SDGs no later than Dec 31 2030. But even in the aftermath of all 193 nation leaders having agreed on this clear roadmap, too many of them returned and thought they could run their countries within the same mindset of what led after World War II to the cold war and it didn’t change even after the Wall came down which had divided East and West Europe for 40 years”.

Allen Coliban, the Mayors of Brasov, as well as Jasmin Ademovic, the Chairman of the Sarajevo City Council, fascinated the members of the SDG Lab in Davos with the progress they already achieved during the past months and years (this 12 min video illustrates progress in Brasov https://youtu.be/yjXfFnxsJuY ) Further concrete steps will be shared during this years UN Habitat World Urban Forum at the UNGSII “Unicorns meet Mayors for SDG Implementation” June 26-30 2022 in Kattowitz and then at the Green Cities Conference in Brasov Sep 12-14 2022.

Gareth Presch, Founder of the World Health Innovation Summit and the Global Social Prescribing Alliance presented to the participants of this years UNGSII SDG Lab the concept and partners of the SDG 3 Health Hub in Brasov as well as smart solution providers such as Halocare from Dublin, who will help mayors ensuring their cities will be resilient towards threats such as Covid19. Sarah Jane O`Dwyer, CEO of Halocare and Prof Johnny Walker, Co-Founder of Halocare Group ran the participants through the digital health service provided in Ireland. Danny Wachter illustrated the value of Biostel, Xaver Einsle provided insights in the future of identifying cancer in time and Prasun Mishra, Chair of WISE based in San Francisco enlightened the SDG Lab participants on the solutions found and financed by him and his partners. They all will be tested at the 2 future cities presented by Shannon Kalayanamitr in the 5G projects in Thailand, one of the UNGSII Industry Excellence Partners and by Hans-Josef Radke, who will create the first Star City close to Hanoi in Vietnam.

As Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, Co-Chair of UNSDSN pointed out, it is not a question of funding, helping the cities all across the continents to fasttrack SDG implementation, as enormous funds have been created for example EU Green Fund with financed agreed by World Bank, IMF, EBRD and others – it is more a question of empowering the city administrations to learn how to apply to receive these funds. And thanks to the former president of NASDAQ, Alfred Berkeley and the former manager of the UN Pension Fund, Joseph Cajigal, investments within the framework of the SDGs create competitive returns like UNGSIIs SCR 500, which was able to celebrate a five-year cumulative result above 67% - outperforming the MSCI world.

“Seeing Allen and Jasmin leading their cities and the citizens within the framework of the United Nations Goals provides solid hope that Globalization 2.0 ensures, nobody is left behind,” said Roland Schatz at the closing of this year's SDG Lab and inviting it to continue in January 2023. We had an update on the Kinshasa Process by Prof. Bertram Lohmüller, Thomas Wu and former US Ambassador Prof. JD Bindenagel at the SDG Lab that will lead to a better understanding that the motto of “leaving nobody behind '' is a principle which will become a concrete yard-stick for communities, but also for businesses. “Just take a closer look, how Japan treated the UAE 51 Years ago and see how both are now willing to open up and share this experience with all countries in Africa is a true step forward. Join us from the 27/28 August in Tunis at the TICAD Conference seeing how Globalization 2.0 works.
